Minnesota Foster Care and Adoption
Adoption in Minnesota
Adoptive parents in Minnesota may be single, married, or same sex partners. Married persons or couples must have been married for at least one year. Adoptive parents must be at least 21 years old but there is generally no upper age limit placed on the adopting parents. They can be experienced in parenting or not, own or rent the house they live.
As part of the home study and application process, adoptive parents are required to complete a Model Approach to Partnerships in Parenting (MAPP) class and the Deciding Together curriculum, and may also be required to take the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory- 2 (MMPI-2).
Foster Care in Minnesota
The requirements for prospective foster parents are similar to those of the adoptive parents. The following are the steps a prospective foster parent has to take:
- Contact the county or a social service agency
- Complete the application and fact sheet – Minnesota offers one application for child foster care licensing and adoption. In order to be a licensed foster care provider, you need to complete and submit the application for child placement and individual fact sheet.
- Initiate a background study – foster care background studies are required for everyone in the home 13 years of age and older and are completed by the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
- Have a home study completed
- Receive foster care license – This license is good for either one or two years. Prior to the expiration date, the assessment will need to be updated to renew the license.
- Participate in training
