North Dakota Foster Care and Adoption

Adoption in North Dakota

Adoptive parents in North Dakota must be 21 years of age or older and may be married or single, childless, or already parenting other children. Having a disability does not automatically disqualify anyone from adopting a child but a prospective adoptive parent must be able to care for a child and meet the child’s needs throughout childhood.

No matter what type of adoption they decide to pursue, adoptive parents will have to have a home study completed. Potential adoptive parents are also required to complete a series Parent Resources for Information, Development, and Education (PRIDE) training classes.

Foster care in North Dakota

A foster home in North Dakota must be licensed. Prospective foster parents may be single or married and they must:

  • be at least 21 years of age
  • be financially stable
  • own or rent a home or apartment
